Apple has decided to postpone the launch of Apple Pay Later to 2023, reports Mark Gurman of Bloomberg. It's a "buy now, pay later" service that allows Apple Pay transactions to be split into four parts over six weeks.

The company did not explain the reason for the delay, but added the following message at the bottom of the iOS 16 website:

Coming in a future update for qualifying applicants in the United States for purchases online and in apps on iPhone and iPad. May not be available in all states.

Apple Pay Later is one of several iOS 16 features that will not appear in the initial release. Gurman notes that among the new features listed as appearing later, Apple Pay Later is the only one that doesn't have a timeline. All other delayed features are listed as "later this year."

Gurman claims that the postponement is due to some serious technical and engineering issues. The feature probably won't arrive until iOS 16.4 in the spring.

Initially, the service will only launch in the US.
