Telegram has already surpassed Facebook Messenger and stays second only to WhatsApp, said Pavel Durov.

Telegram now has more than 700 million users, and Telegram claims more than 2 million people download the app daily, according to Fortune and Apptopia. As Telegram Founder Pavel Durov said in his channel, messenger is now second only to Meta's WhatsApp and the gap 'is closing year by year'.

🏆 In the last 5 years, Telegram surpassed Facebook Messenger to become the most popular cloud-based messaging app. Telegram is now second only to WhatsApp and is closing the gap year by year. No wonder our competitors are concerned! 🔥

Telegram's founder and CEO, Pavel Durov, has built the app's reputation on the principle of untrammeled free speech. However, running a global tech platform is expensive, and Durov estimates operating expenses to be "at least a few hundred million a year" – a sum he can no longer fund from his own pocket.

To address this, he has raised $1 billion in convertible bonds, added paid subscriptions and advertising, and begun auctioning usernames. For now, however, the app remains a key player in the global social media landscape.
