Israeli company Zooz Power, which has developed an electric vehicle (EV) fast charging system based on kinetic flywheel technology, is set to strike its first commercial deals in Europe, the US and Israel, the Times of Israel reports.

The company has developed a system that draws energy from the grid to spin eight steel wheels, which weigh about half a tonne, on a block, 17,000 times a minute. The resulting electrical energy is converted into kinetic energy.

When the car is charged, the rotation slows down to turn the kinetic energy back into electrical energy. It is channelled into the vehicle's battery with such intensity that the battery is fully charged in around 15 minutes.

Zooz Power CEO Boaz Weiser compared this method of charging to flushing the toilet with a large amount of water quickly.

He added that using kinetic energy avoids environmental problems, unlike mining and using lithium. And the system continues to produce the same level of electricity over time as it did in the beginning compared to traditional lithium batteries.

The five Zooster-100 units will appear at five sites in Germany. They will be financed by a German investment company, which believes that selling electricity from the units will generate more profit than solar power plants. Zooz Power is currently in the process of obtaining certification and the company hopes to install the first charging units in Germany by the end of the year.

In addition, the company will install a charging station at the Dor Alon petrol station in Segul, Petach Tikva, in central Israel, by the end of this year.

In the US, the company intends to put two charging stations early next year, one in Rock Hill, South Carolina, and another near Miami.
