The University of Tokyo, also known as Todai, is set to launch a series of educational programmes that will take place in the Metaverse.
The new curricula will take place under Todai Faculty of Engineering and engineering-related graduate schools. They will be open to students ranging from high school students to adults seeking employment. Graduates of the courses will receive certificates.
The programme will be divided according to the students' background. Junior-high and high-school students will be taught about space as well as how to find jobs in engineering, science and other related fields. And those already working will have the opportunity to retrain or upskill by taking courses in artificial intelligence, next-generation communications technology and entrepreneurial education.
The programmes will also attract large numbers of women, as Japan has a problem with a lack of female representation in engineering.
The new courses should help address the shortage of skilled personnel working on "digital transformation" and "advanced technology."
University officials also stressed that the Metaverse would create a situation where "anyone, regardless of age, gender, social standing and area of residence, can learn about engineering and information science."
