Saudi Arabia has announced plans to build a new zero-carbon city the Line. It will be part of the city NEOM, Mohammed bin Salman, Crown Prince and Chairman of the NEOM Board of Directors, announced in January 2021.

The Line will consist of two 500-metre-high buildings, which will run parallel to each other across 170 km of desert. It will be 200 metres wide.

The city will have a capacity of 9 million residents and will be built on 34 square kilometres of land. The climate will provide them with the opportunity to enjoy the surrounding nature while walking.

A new concept of urban design, Zero Gravity Urbanism, will be used in the construction of The Line. It will allow residents to move seamlessly in three dimensions - up, down or across. According to Mohammed bin Salman, the project is designed so that residents can reach each other within a 5-minute walk, as well as move from one end of the building to the other within 20 minutes.

The Line will include four different ecological zones: coast, desert, mountains, and upper valley. Nature will be integrated into the heart of the settlements, enhancing livelihoods and well-being, as well as supporting local food production.

The Line project will be free of roads, cars and exhaust fumes. It will run on 100% renewable energy.

Mohammed bin Salman, Crown Prince and Chairman of the NEOM Board of Directors, said:

NEOM is one of the most important projects of the Saudi Vision 2030 and The Line is an affirmation of our firm commitment to presenting a project to the whole world. NEOM is a place for those who dream of a better tomorrow.
